What’s holding back the United States

(mostly from Jamie Dimon’s letter to shareholders – April 2017)

  • Middle class declined from 61% of households in 1971 to 50% in 2015
  • The real incomes for the bottom 20 % of earners declined by more than 8% between 1999 and 2015
  • Over the last 16 years the US has spent trillions of dollars on wars
  • US healthcare costs are twice as much per person vs. most other developed nations
  • 40% of students (300,000) who receive advanced degrees in STEM at American universities are foreign nationals with no legal way of staying
  • Felony convictions, for even minor offense, have led in part to 20 million Americans having a criminal record – limiting job opportunities
  • Labour force participation for men ages 25-54 at 88% one of the lowest among developed nations
    • 57% of these non-working males are on disability
  • 71% of today’s youth (ages 17-24) are ineligible for the military due to lack of proper education (basic reading and writing skills) or health issues (often obesity or diabetes)
  • In many inner city schools fewer than 60% of students graduate
  • About 20 million (16%) of American workers earn less than $10.10 an hour
  • About 52 million (42%) earn less than $15 an hour
